Fong's Wing Chun Gung-Fu Federation
Augustine Fong was born on the island of Macao, off the coast of southern China. Since his early childhood, he has had a special interest in the Chinese martial arts. In 1960, he was fortunate enough to begin training in a traditional gung fu style. His instructor was the honorable Wing Chun master, Ho Kam Ming. Master Ho, a top student of the late grand master Yip Man, had, at that time, introduced the style to the Macao area. Augustine Fong, without a second thought, became one of his first students. By 1964, master Ho's school had grown considerably. The school had gained a reputation, so good, in fact, that a famous gung-fu school from Hong Kong decided to send a formal challenge. Challenges, back then, were very serious business. The challenging school, in this case, had also obtained an impressive name and reputation. It was understood that they had fought and won over a hundred contests in this manner, and as a result, defeated a number of top schools in Hong Kong. Accepting the written challenge, master Ho decided that Fong would fight the match. Fong was master Ho's best student and toughest fighter. On the appointed day, the challenger appeared along with his instructor and ten fellow students. . . Master Fong currently operates his own federation headquatered in Tucson, Arizona Arizona where he founded his own Wing Chun Academy and established the headquarters for "Fong's Wing Chun Gung-Fu Federation". This association remains devoted to the exact principles of the complete system of Wing Chun Gung-Fu.and currently has affiliated schools throughout the United States and Canada. Quick Talk with Sifu Augustine Fong 1) Sifu Fong, what do you believe are the most important things, that a beginner should focus on in the start? The beginner should have faith in the art and in the teacher. And focus on what he is doing. Don't learn too much in the beginning work on the motion one thing at a time. 2) In the beginning Wing Chun is looked upon for self-defense, but in the end you've stated it goes beyond that, how so? Everybody knows self-defense is Physical action (fighting) which is right to a low level martial arts people. But to a real high-level martial arts people which is a very low and bad solution for self-defense. Because there is not only one way to skin a cat. Lets think, The true self defense is keep yourself un-harm from any situation. If you punch out you opponent with your fist. You may think that you win the fight. But your opponent may also thinks that he hurts your fist with his body. In the eye of a true Gung Fu Man, there is no gain or loss in any situation There is always in a balanced situation. So there are ways to self defense without fighting. But you need to know that you can fight. Than you will have the guts to face up any self defense's situation. 3) How has your teaching changed over the last 39 years? My teaching method is always evolving to the best to let people to learn Wing Chun easier and faster in the right way. >>continue reading Fong's Wing Chun Gung-Fu Federation's Official Website: www.fongswingchun.com The CRCA's international popularity is a result of many years of hard work by Randy, carrying out the teachings of Wing Chun that he received from Sifu George Yau, Sifu Augustine Fong (America) and Sifu Ho Kam Ming (Hong Hong). Cory Spinks Finds New Career in Retirement
By Bill Barner | June 22, 2014 Sitting ringside at Strike Gym’s “Boxing at the Creek” amateur fights, Cory Spinks reflects on his illustrious boxing career and discusses his new career training amateur boxers. As an amateur boxer, Cory Spinks won championships in both the Police Athletic League and Golden Gloves. After making the leap into professional fighting, he became a World Champion at both Welterweight and Junior Middleweight. With a fight resume that includes battles against Ricardo Mayorga, Zab Judah and Jermaine Taylor, Spinks has an ocean of work to reflect on. “Zab was the most elusive in the ring,” says Spinks of his two-time Welterweight opponent. “Jermaine [Taylor] hit the hardest, but I can tell you that Mayorga hit hard as well.” When former Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis was once asked if he missed boxing, he replied “that’s like asking me if I miss getting punched in the face.” Spinks can relate. “I love boxing, and you have to love the sport to be a boxer,” Spinks says, reflecting on his 2013 retirement from the sweet science. “It requires a heart of gold and a lot of toughness. But I don’t miss it. It’s a grueling sport.” “I train a girl now who is twelve years old and hits like a grown man,” Spinks says with pride. “I call her Flakes.’ No first or last name, just Flakes.” Spinks has found support for his retirement from his wife and his daughter, who joined him at ringside. “I’m absolutely happy with his retirement,” say wife Christy, who is expecting their second child. “It was my idea. When you’re done, you’re done. And when it’s over, it’s over.” Accompanied by fellow trainer Johnny Schulz, Spinks now trains amateur fighters at Strike Gym in Coconut Creek, FL. “He is doing a summer camp now with kids and they love him,” Schulz says of Spinks. “These kids really have no clue the level of his accomplishments, but they have amazing respect for him anyway. It really is something special.” Spinks currently trains 15 kids, as well as a summer training camp wherein he teaches 23 kids, and he teaches more than just pugilism. “I teach them how to counterpunch and how to love the sport of boxing, because it’s a sport you have to learn to love,” Spinks says, describing his summer boxing camp. “But I also stress manners, grades and the importance of respecting their parents when I’m with these kids.” Spinks and Schulz are available for boxing training and summer boxing camp at www.strikegym.com. What Initially Drew You To The Martial Arts? Earnest Hart: I probably told this story a thousand times, but being from a religious background, my mother was a Jehovah Witness, she wanted to raise me to be non-violent. Being in the toughest are as down in the projects, you got tired of running or people taunting you without fighting. Now I was a big Batman fan. In fact my nickname was Batman back in "the hood. "Then the Green Hornet came and fought Batman in one episode and I was for Batman but Kato looked so good, I had tore-think things so I started watching the Green Hornet and that made me get interested in the martial arts. I basically just started teaching myself because I couldn't afford to go to schools back then. I would just go to karate schools and watch them and come back and teach myself. When I was fourteen I joined a school. When I went into the school was so focused that everybody thought I had taken karate before. It's just that if you never done anything in your life and you just do this one thing and you focus on what you've always wanted to do, and you get the opportunity to do it, you pick it up. I pretty much whizzed through it right off the bat. . . >>continue reading Breathing is the process that moves air in and out of the lungs. Aerobicorganisms require oxygen to release energy via respiration, in the form of the metabolism of energy-rich molecules such as glucose. Breathing is only one process that delivers oxygen to where it is needed in the body and removes carbon dioxide. Another important process involves the movement of blood by the circulatory system. Gas exchange occurs in the pulmonary alveoli by passive diffusion of gases between the alveolar gas and the blood in lungcapillaries. Once these dissolved gases are in the blood, the heart powers their flow around the body (via the circulatory system). The medical term for normal relaxed breathing is eupnea. In addition to removing carbon dioxide, breathing results in loss of water from the body. Exhaled air has a relative humidity of 100% because of water diffusing across the moist surface of breathing passages and alveoli. . . It is one of our most vital functions. One of the Five Principles of Yoga is Pranayama or Breathing Exercise which promotes proper breathing. In a Yogic point of view, proper breathing is to bring more oxygen to the blood and to the brain, and to control Prana or the vital life energy. Pranayama Yoga also goes hand in hand with the Asanas. The union of these two Yogic Principles is considered as the highest form of purification and self-discipline, covering both mind and body. Read More Anxiety, Fear and Breathing It is one thing to be alerted to a threat but altogether another to over react with a tendency towards fear, to fight, to flee, to feint, freeze, fake it, fumble, mumble or stumble. There are many causes of anxiety. Food additives, sugar, adrenal dysfunction and other internally consumed substances. Situations in life that are threatening or seem so will cause anxiety. The idea you do not have enough time is a huge cause of anxiety. Taking on too many projects or responsibilities invites anxiety and we too often forget we chose and often can un-choose. Spending too much money, getting into debt and worrying about that will cause anxiety. Eventually a certain level anxiety becomes an every day occurrence that we sort of get used to. The breathing pattern sets in and never leaves. In other words bad breathing from excessive stress or anxiety or trauma invites more bad breathing and/or anxiety/nervousness which causes worse breathing which causes more nervousness. It feeds itself and often changes to panic. Modern stressful living as well as past traumas have resulted in vast numbers of people over reacting and even imagining threats that do not exist. When the breathing is not allowed to stay in balance every reaction to life becomes distorted or negatively magnified. . .Read More Reflexology, or zone therapy is an alternative medicine involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on what reflexologists claim to be a system of zones and reflex areas that they say reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. A 2009 systematic review of randomised controlled trials concludes that "The best evidence available to date does not demonstrate convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition." The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as: "A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears and their referral areas within zone related areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions, the feet being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body." There is no consensus among reflexologists on how reflexology is supposed to work; a unifying theme is the idea that areas on the foot correspond to areas of the body, and that by manipulating these one can improve health through one's qi. Reflexologists divide the body into ten equal vertical zones, five on the right and five on the left. Concerns have been raised by medical professionals that treating potentially serious illnesses with reflexology, which has no proven efficacy, could delay the seeking of appropriate medical treatment. . .Read More Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting and manipulating filiform needles into various acupuncture points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. The earliest written record of acupuncture is the Chinese text Shiji (史記, English: Records of the Grand Historian) with elaboration of its history in the 2nd century BCE medical text Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經, English: Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon). Though thought to originate in China, variations in theory and practice are taught throughout the world mainly differing in their use of Chinese herbology,[citation needed] the choice of acupuncture points and in modern applications the stimulation of points with new technologies such as electric currents.[5] A related traditional practice is moxibustion (灸), the burning of cone-shaped preparations of Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) on or near the skin often in proximity to acupuncture points. . . >>continue reading What Is Ear Acupuncture? Ear acupuncture, also known as auricular therapy, is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Auricular therapy is widely used for many conditions, including addiction treatment, mood disorders, obesity, pain, and other conditions. This medical system emphasizes a holistic approach to medicine, an approach that treats the whole person. The acupuncture points found on the ear help to regulate the body's internal organs, structures, and functions. Auricular therapy has a long history of use in China. It was mentioned in the most famous of ancient Chinese medical textbooks, “The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine.” In modern times, auricular therapy has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's own feel-good chemicals. How is ear acupuncture used in a treatment? Ear acupuncture is generally incorporated into a regular acupuncture treatment. In addition to using acupuncture points on the rest of the body, your acupuncturist may select a few ear acupuncture points that they feel will be helpful for your particular condition. What are ear seeds and ear tacks? Ear acupuncture points may be stimulated for a longer period of time by using ear seeds or ear tacks. Ear seeds are small seeds from the Vaccaria plant. These seeds are held in place on the ear with a small piece of adhesive tape. Ear seeds may be left in the ear for a few days or up to two weeks. Ear tacks are very small needles with an adhesive backing. Ear tacks are inserted into the ear and left in the ear for a few days or up to one week. 100 BLACK MEN of America Founded in 1963, the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., is a national alliance of leading African American men of business, industry, public affairs and government, devoting their combined skills and resources to confronting the challenges facing African America youth. Concerned Black Men - National Organization Concerned Black Men - National Organization (CBM) is in its 33rd year of providing youth development services to children from disadvantaged communities. Through the work of a nationwide network of chapters located in 31 U.S. cities, and in Pretoria, South Africa, and an experienced and credentialed national staff located in Washington, DC, CBM conducts “Best Practices” programs and projects to support youth and strengthen their families. Our program models are used by other CBM chapters and community-based groups nationally. A male services organization that proudly wears its grass roots heritage, CBM was founded in 1975 when several Philadelphia police officers sponsored social events for kids at-risk to gang violence. The vision of CBM’s founding members has expanded to include children and their parents nationwide, but the philosophy of men offering themselves as positive role models to children has remained CBM’s mission for more than a quarter of a century. The HH Brotherhood is based on the simple idea that men sometimes just want to go out and be one of the guys. No rules, no deadlines, no "honey do" list, no kids needing help gluing themselves to something....just fun without worrying about the responsibilities and stress of everyday life for a few hours. The Hard Hat Brotherhood allows them to do this and be able to get a little silly too. A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment for artistic, ritualistic or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. The first written reference to the word, "tattoo" (or Samoan "Tatau") appears in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour in 1769: "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition". Tattooing has been practiced for centuries worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally wore facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Māori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples and among certain tribal groups in the Taiwan, Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand and Micronesia. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world...Read More Check out these tattoo history articles by Lars Krutak. Body piercing, a form of body modification, is the practice of puncturing or cutting a part of the human body, creating an opening in which jewellery may be worn. The word piercing can refer to the act or practice of body piercing, or to an opening in the body created by this act or practice. While the history of body piercing is obscured by a lack of scholarly reference and popular misinformation, ample evidence exists to document that it has been practiced in various forms by both sexes since ancient times throughout the world.
Ear piercing and nose piercing have been particularly widespread and are well represented in historical records and among grave goods. The oldest mummified remains ever discovered were sporting earrings, attesting to the existence of the practice more than 5,000 years ago. Nose piercing is documented as far back as 1500 BC Piercings of these types have been documented globally, while lip and tongue piercings were historically found in African and American tribal cultures. Nipple and genital piercing have also been practiced by various cultures, with nipple piercing dating back at least to Ancient Rome while genital piercing is described in Ancient India ca. 320 to 550 CE The history of navel piercing is less clear. The practice of body piercing has waxed and waned in Western culture, but it has experienced an increase of popularity since World War II, with sites other than the ears gaining subcultural popularity in the 70s and spreading to mainstream in the 1990s. The reasons for piercing or not piercing are varied. Some people pierce for religious or spiritual reasons, while others pierce for self-expression, for aesthetic value, for sexual pleasure, to conform to their culture or to rebel against it. Some forms of piercing remain controversial, particularly when applied to youth. The display or placement of piercings have been restricted by schools, employers and religious groups. In spite of the controversy, some people have practiced extreme forms of body piercing, with Guinness bestowing World Records on individuals with hundreds and even thousands of permanent and temporary piercings...Read More
